Biography

Russell Alton Sperry, 82, of Oneonta passed away Saturday, February 6, 2010 at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta surrounded by his loving family.

He was born June 16, 1927 in Westford, NY the son of the late Alton and Grace (Bostwick) Sperry.

On July 25, 1982, Russell married Christina Effner in Otego.

Russell was a truck driver for Reinhardt Home Heating in West Oneonta for over 50 years until his retirement.

If you were looking for Russell, you could always find him out in his garage tinkering on something. Russell will be remembered for his stories and always having a joke to tell. He was loved by everyone.

Russell is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Christina Sperry of Oneonta; eight children, Virginia (Ginny) Castle of Buffalo, Richard and Melanie Sperry of Laurens, Russell and Phyllis Sperry of Alaska, Tom and Pam Berger of Buffalo, Debbie and Mike Hall of Oneonta, Richard Goodspeed and Tammy Green of Oneonta, Brian and Tami Goodspeed of Oneonta and Tony Beers of Oneonta; 38 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; two sisters, Agnes Rous of Otego and Neva Eccleston of Norwich; two brothers, Donald Sperry of Oneonta and Roger Sperry of Oneonta; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one daughter, Christine Sperry; one son, Douglas Sperry, Sr.; two grandsons, Richard and Donald Sperry; three sisters, Claudine, Louise and Edith; and one brother, Ernest.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River Street, Otego from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. The family would like to invite family and friends to join them for a get together to Celebrate Russell’s life following calling hours at the Otego Fire Department.
